Fired up the latest EO build this morning to test out all the new features (many thanks again) and tried to dl artwork from gamesdb for a few titles and ran into an issue which leads to my question - do my roms have to be unzipped by chance to be able to dl artwork from gamesdb?

Nope it doesn't matter if they are compressed or not, I just tested it using Mega Man V for the gameboy. I even tried a slightly altered name and it worked e.g.
Name: Megaman V Platform: Nintendo Game Boy
Results 1: Mega Man V Results 1: V-Rally Championship Edition
So result one would be correct. Just make sure you are searching with the correct name and the correct platform.
